About
Welcome to the Penn State Ski Team!
Founded in 1973, the Penn State Ski Team is comprised of talented, driven students who love to ski and are interested in alpine ski racing. Whether you have ski raced your entire life or are just now becoming interested in the alpine racing aspect of the sport, this ski team offers opportunities for PSU students to improve their skiing and racing skills while meeting others with similar interests. We are a member of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) and compete against several colleges in the Allegheny conference during the spring semester. Consistent on-snow training, excellent coaching, and a passion for the sport have earned the team several Allegheny Conference Championships, Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, and a spot at the USCSA National Championships for the past several years. How does the season lead up to all that? Here’s a look at how the team works…
During the Fall semester, all prospective team members attend organizational meetings, dryland training, and fundraisers to prepare for the upcoming season. Drylands are an excellent way to get in shape, and all other team events provide opportunities for everyone to get to know each other. During the week before the Spring semester, tryouts are held at Tussey Mountain for those athletes who would like to earn a spot on the competitive teams. The fastest 5 men and 5 women make up the A team; the next fastest 5 men and 5 women make up the B team; all other team members are on the C team. Regardless of what team you are placed on, all team members participate in on-snow training, which occurs Tuesday and Thursday nights during the race season. All members are also encouraged to participate in races each weekend for the first five weekends of Spring semester; each weekend, the team travels to a mountain in the Allegheny area to compete in one day of Slalom and one day of GS racing. For the A team, Regional Championships are held at the end of February and National Championships the first week of March. An end-of-year team banquet is held in April.
